Sony Ericsson unveils the world's first 12MP phone

N/A
The Sony Ericsson Idou - the worlds first 12 mega-pixel camera phone. At the moment the Idou is just concept but it is due to be released in the second half of 2009. As-well as having a nice 12 mega-pixel camera it also comes with a new 'Entertainment Unlimited' service. Viewing images on the Idou's 3.5 inch touchscreen having an amazing 360x640 pixels resolution and a 16:9 wide screen screen ratio is of excellent quality. Disappointingly the Idou only has an LED flash which gives some photographs a blue tint, most people think that it would have been better with a Xenon flash instead.

It uses Symbian OS which means an update to the Sony Ericsson interface, menu system and the overall experience of using the mobile phone. It features a built in Global Positioning System (GPS), WiFi and an accelerometer which is a motion sensor.

So if you are looking for a new handset with good features and an excellent camera then the Idou might be worth considering, but it won't be cheap.

The new Motorola Aura

Thursday, 9 April 2009

OK, lets start off with this, the item in the image above costs £1,200 and the item in the image is the Motorola Aura. Well some of you may be thinking ''Wow, that looks so cool'', but most of you will be thinking ''What the heck, that doesn't even look like a mobile phone and why is it so expensive?". The reason why it is so expensive is mainly because the screen is made from 62 carat sapphire-crystal and because...

...it is made from over 700 different pieces some of which are absolutely miniature! Now what you can see above is the 2.0 mega pixel camera, underneath that is the 'rotating' mechanism and I can also tell you that the outer body is made from stainless-steel.

The features however are not so glamorous. Being the world first round-screen phone lets it down a lot, as web browsing becomes increasingly difficult because parts of the screen are 'chopped off'. This is so because Internet pages are all square (or rectangular). The battery life for the Aura is extremely poor, at most it can manage a couple of house of 'messing around' and a night on standby before draining completely.

If you want to learn more about the Motorola Aura, go to the MSN Technology News section.

Microsoft Suface - the next computer generation!

Microsoft Surface has the potential to transform computing (image © Microsoft)
In the very near future you won't need a mouse to use your computer...neither will you need a keyboard to type - they will be considered scrap! Instead of those things everything will be done by touch, you will physically be able to 'drag and drop' your files using your hand. You'll also be able to send emails by flicking them off the screen, using your computer will be a totally natural experience!

All this will be made possible by Microsoft's' new development - Microsoft Surface. Currently they are only being sold to businesses for a hefty price of £8,500 before tax!

Personally I cannot wait till they are released for the general public to buy, but I hope they won't cost that much!

If you are looking for more information about the upcoming 'Microsoft Suface' then I have found a very good piece written by the MSN technology news department. Have a look by clicking here.

Apple introduces a price change for iTunes

Wednesday, 8 April 2009

Apple announced a three-tier price plan change for iTunes, which means that prices for songs in UK will change. At the moment songs downloaded of iTunes are all 79p, now Apple are going to change all this to 59 pence, 79 pence and 99 pence. This means that newer songs will be more expensive than older songs. Apple says that for every ten lower priced songs in the store there will be one higher priced song.

Amazon, biggest iTunes rival has made one hundred reductions to some of their songs including Lady Gaga's 'Poker Face' and Lilly Allen's 'The Fear'. But even after that iTunes still controls around 70 percent of the market. More discounts may be needed if Amazon wants to be a proper competitor.

The New DSi is Released

Tuesday, 7 April 2009

On the 3rd April 2009 Nintendo's new DSi was released here in the UK at an average price of £149.99. Many people are wondering what is the difference between the DSi and the DS Lite, well the DSi comes with two built in cameras which are 0.3 mega pixels with no zoom function. Although this may sound very poor, it is perfect for all those fun images, keep in mind this was not built for its photographing capabilities. You can edit images taken on the DSi using its the same application you use to take the images, for example you can use the following effects:

  • Distortion
  • Graffiti
  • Colour - changing the colour of certain areas of the image
  • Mirror
  • Mischief - adds beards, moustaches and cartoon eyes to the image
  • Emoter - changes the subjects facial expression
  • Merge - take two image or two different people and it will merge the two faces into one
  • Resemblance - calculates how alike two people are in the same image
  • Frame
The DSi can also record sounds which can be edited afterwards. Editing sounds can do the following things:

  • Change the pitch
  • Change the speed

In addition to this you can make sounds sound like different things like a budgie, an electric fan and a whistle just to name a few. There are twelve of these things to choose from altogether (including the ones I mentioned). In the same application you use to record sound you have an option to play music files these have to be of an AAC format (iTunes music). This is played via a SD memory card which can be inserted into the side of the DSi.

The next feature of the DSi is a DSi Shop (DSi Ware) where you can purchase software and basic games for your DSi, you purchase these things with 'Nintendo DSi points'. 'Nintendo DSi points' can be redeemed from 'Nintendo Points Cards' or bought with a Credit or Debit card. For 1000 Nintendo DSi points it costs £9.00 but there are some free applications to download.

The menu system for the DSi looks considerably different from the DS Lite's, it now looks more like that of the Nintendo Wii. 'PictoChat' and 'DS Download Play' are exactly the same as the DS Lite's, but now you do not have to turn your DS off if you want to go back onto the main menu after using either of these. This is the same with the Nintendo DS games if you take a game out or insert one in, it does not freeze your DS.

The body of the DSi is basically the same as that of the DSi except for some very minor changes like the fact that the DSi is slightly longer but thinner, lighter and brighter. The screen size is also a shaving bigger making the gaming experience alot better. The sound quality has been rapidly improved along with a stronger WiFi connection. Also the volume control is no longer a slide mechanism, but instead two buttons (volume up/volume down). On the DSi you lose the ability to play Gameboy Advance games (Slot-2) as there just isn't a slot for you to insert a game card.

Meaning of 'Nom de plume'

I have been getting lots of emails in the last few weeks since I changed the 'Welcome' section on the sidebar. These email have been asking what 'nom de plume' means and...well I am going to tell you.

Ok, 'nom de plume' is a French word which basically means 'alias name' in English.

I hope that clears a few things up!
